An essay and disclaimer on how it is impossible to permanently ban someone from a website
FYI: IP banning won't help as a person can change their IP, change internet service providers, use proxies, use Tor Anonymity Network, use botnets, use virtual private networks, use open wifi networks, use pubic computers, go to another person's home, use a different dialup number, or even have other people do things in this website for them. Credit card authorization doesn't work because credit cards can only view a person's street number and zip code and that's only if address verification is enabled on their card, and even then a person can just get a new card with a different address associated with it. Requiring social security numbers, driver's license numbers, etc. for verification or other such issues are still bypassable because someone could use stolen/phished/fake numbers for verification. Telephone verification just requires someone to have to pay for another telephone line. Requiring a faxed passport means someone could bypass it with fake documents. Hopefully, the point about it being impossible to ban someone from a website has been made.
While an important disclaimer, this is not necessarily a bad thing about the internet because a lot of times on other websites and IRC, the administrators use their power purely to bully other users, and the worst of these administrators will also lie about it and obsessively hide evidence to make their victims look at fault, refusing to ever admit error. Among administrators who are volunteer/unpaid, where this does not happen is a rare exception to the rule.
